Using the internet has become a popular activity among the retired generation, according to the British Computer Society (BCS).
David Evans, government relations manager for the society, explains that many older people are finding that new information communications technology can be useful to them.
"It's very important that people of all ages have the opportunity and support in moving online, should they choose to do so," Mr Evans adds.
He states that as more public services make use of the internet, it is "vital" that people are not excluded as a result, noting that it is important that the "digital divide" does not lead to the elderly becoming a disenfranchised segment of society.
Recent research by Ofcom suggests that people over the age of 50 account for a quarter of all internet users and that the older generation dedicate an average of 42 hours a month to internet usage.
