Deregulation of workplace pensions welcomed

November 19, 2007
The National Association of Pension Funds (NAPF) has welcomed recent government measures to support workplace pensions.

Joanne Segars, chief executive of the NAPF, commented that the association's members report that deregulation is the key to sustaining good workplace pensions and that the government's package signals that it supports quality provision.

Specific points of the government consultation that the NAPF supports include the commitment to review the impact of pension legislation on normal corporate activity and the introduction of a means to help schemes bring rules into line with the changes in legislation.

Ms Segars concluded: "Defined benefit schemes are an important part of retirement provision in the UK. The deregulatory proposals will help to sustain workplace pensions so that workers can continue to build up valuable pensions not just now but also in the future."

The NAPF has over 1,300 members, which provide pensions to more than ten million working people.
