Over-50s 'make use of internet' to discuss health concerns

November 06, 2007
An increasing number of older people are discussing issues such as health advice with their peers online, new figures have suggested.

Data from over-50s service provider Saga has indicated that the most popular area on its Saga Zone social networking site is the health related forum, which receives thousands of visits per day from senior internet users.

The firm notes that the average user on the health section of its site is 62 and that it is especially popular with women, as three times more females post requests and advice on the facility.

Chief executive of Saga Andrew Goodsell commented that it was great to see such a large number of people over 50 making the most of new technology.

"Social networking sites provide a unique platform for [this age group] to offer reassurance and support within their peer group."

Other social networking sites aimed specifically at the senior market include MyChumsClub, which states that it offers older internet users the opportunity to safely meet new cyber friends in the real world
