'Vast majority' of care homes give good service

June 08, 2007
Cases of neglect and abuse in care homes do raise issues about the standard of treatment in homes, as well as highlighting the need for clear complaint procedures, one charity has asserted.

Counsel and Care, a national charity dedicated to the care and support of older people, their families and carers, has stated, however, that the "vast majority" of care homes provide a good service to their clients.

Stephen Burke, chief executive of the charity, observed: "One [issue] is public understanding of current processes. I don't think people are nearly as aware of the Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI) as they are of Ofsted, who regulate schools... There needs to be greater awareness."

He added that cases in the public eye could achieve some good in that they encourage family members and carers to ask questions and raise concerns whenever they occur.

At the end of April, the CSCI unveiled "ambitious plans" for the two years ahead, centred on a "radical agenda" to transform the way homes are inspected and regulated.
