Recently-announced price hikes from E.ON will cause "misery" for thousands of pensioners, according to Age Concern.
Director of the older people's charity Gordon Lishman comments that the organisation is concerned that seniors may well cut back on their heating due to fear regarding unaffordable bills.
"The government and energy companies must work together to alleviate the huge pressure that high fuel bills place on the poorest. The government needs to do more to meet its fuel poverty targets for vulnerable households," he adds.
Mr Lishman states that the winter fuel payment should also be increased by £100 so that all older people are able to heat their properties properly.
The charity advises anyone concerned about the cost of bills to contact them for advice.
In recent days, the organisation advised the elderly to be extra careful during the period of cold weather that is currently affecting many parts of the country, recommending wrapping up warm and staying active.
