Britain's first pensioners' playground opens

January 31, 2008
The first pensioners' playground in Britain opened yesterday and was declared a success by elderly users.

It is hoped that the facility will lead to the creation of similar schemes elsewhere in the UK, according to the Metro.

Located in Greater Manchester, the £150,000 playground features fitness equipment which is specifically designed to provide gentle exercise for those over the age of 60.

Older people's charity Age Concern praised the scheme, stating that a well-designed fitness park could provide a great way to encourage elderly people to socialise and get fitter at the same time.

Local resident Peggy Yuill told the publication: "It makes you feel 21 again. Makes you feel good and gives you a real buzz."

In related news that may interest active older people, research by AA Insurance recently suggested that the average rucksack and contents - which could include a mobile phone and digital camera - is now worth £450.
