'Distraction robbers' targeting the elderly

January 25, 2008
Elderly Britons have been warned by West Yorkshire Police that there are robbers in the area using distraction tactics to steal from unsuspecting old-age citizens.

The warning and an appeal for witnesses comes after a man posing as a water authority representative was able to divert the attention of an elderly couple from Bradford while his accomplice entered their property and stole their cash.

After the incident, which took place on January 22nd and saw a couple aged 94 and 77 robbed in their own home, the local police force is urging elderly people to be aware of the threat and to avoid being duped in this fashion.

Detective Inspector Gerry O'Shea from Bradford North Police commented: "Whilst these types of burglary are quite rare, there are people out there who will target elderly and vulnerable people.

"We would advise you not to allow any cold-callers or strangers into your home until you are satisfied that they are genuine."

Meanwhile, West Yorkshire Police are also keen to speak to anyone who might have useful information relating to an armed robbery that took place at a shop in Baildon earlier this week.ADNFCR-1073-ID-18441818-ADNFCR
