The recent price increases announced by British Gas have been met with disappointment by older people's charity Age Concern.
Director of the organisation Gordon Lishman stated that such hikes will force many thousands of senior citizens into fuel poverty, which is already a major concern.
"We're really disappointed that despite their very healthy profits the big energy firms don't think they can afford to put off these increases until after the winter quarter," he added.
Mr Lishman stated that the winter quarter is when pensioners who have the least cash are most worried about the cost of heating their homes.
He explained that many older people may cut back on their heating as a result of such concerns, which could endanger their health.
The Age Concern director urged the government to increase the winter fuel payment by at least £100.
Winter fuel payments currently stand at up to £200 for those between 60 and 79 and up to £300 for people over the age of 80, depending on individual circumstances.
